Some are from the making, some are from the weather and some are from the cultivar. This tasting will help you better understand what parts of the Tie Guan Yin flavor are from the cultivar.

This taster includes two servings of two teas.

Tea #1: Anxi Tie Guan Yin Oolong.
From the village of Long Juan, the first tea is an unroasted Tie Guan Yin from 2026. The pure unroasted leaves will give you an idea of Tie Guan Yins natural flavor. While not the best Tie Guan Yin I've had, it does have some of the key flavor notes attributed to Tie Guan Yin.

Tea #2: Tie Guan Yin Red Tea. (black tea)
This tea is actually from Zhe Rong, located outside of Fuding. My friend first made Tie Guan Yin oolong but when he didnt sell he switched to red tea. This red tea is lighter and more aromatic which means some of the Tie Guan Yin qualities are easy to pick out.

With these two teas the making and location were different leaving only the cultivar to be the same. That means we can attribute any common notes between the two teas to the cultivar.

This tasting will help you not only learn to taste teas but also learn to distinguish the flavor of the cutlivar from the flavors of making.
